Sunday Mass Reflection

The Ascension of the Lord

Just before the Ascension the disciples ask, ”Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). Lord Jesus, this is what we’ve been waiting for! Is this when you will make all things right here on earth? Will you show everyone that You are the Messiah after all?

Jesus replies, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8). No, my children, now it’s time to do your part in bringing about my kingdom. Listen to the Holy Spirit, who strengthens you. Start here, in your home, then go out of your comfort zone, spreading the Good News.

“When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight” (Acts 1:9). The disciples were “looking intently at the sky as he was going” (Acts 1:10). Oh Jesus, please do not leave us!

Earlier, Jesus gave them His peace and instructions: “Do not let your hearts be troubled…” (Jn 14:1). “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (Jn:14:26). “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matt 28:19-20). Do not be afraid, my beloved. Spread the Gospel to everyone! Make them my disciples by baptizing them, forgiving their sins, and healing those that are sick. Most of all, teach them to follow me. Through it all, you will not be alone, for I will be right by your side.
