Sunday Mass Reflection

Lord of Your Heart

For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. – John 18:37

Happy Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe! Wow—what a title. Jesus, our brother who died for us, is the king of the entire universe. Jesus, who we receive in the Eucharist under humble appearances of bread and wine, has “dominion, glory, and kingship” over everything for all eternity (see Daniel 7:13-14). Incredible!

Jesus tells Pilate that His kingdom is not of this world. His is not a fallen, earthly political kingdom. He came so that the whole world might be saved and that He might be made ruler of every human heart.

Jesus came to “testify to the truth” (John 18:37). Christ, the Logos, the eternal Word of God condescended to us from His throne in heaven in order to bestow on us eternal life and His light of truth. This is the light that will overcome all the evil and brokenness of this world. What is evil cannot comprehend the light of Christ’s truth (see John 1:1-5).

As Christian disciples, our response to Christ’s truth is to listen to His voice, as He says: “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice” (John 18:37). When we pray, we do exactly this: we listen to God’s truth in our hearts. Christ’s Sacred Heart speaks to ours. The same is true when we read sacred Scripture.

When I hear Christ’s Word in prayer and Scripture, I should not only be a hearer but also a “doer” of His word (see James 1:22). I am called to put His love into action and be obedient to Him. I must listen and act. This week, consider setting aside a few minutes each day to listen to the voice of Christ. He leads and guides each of us with love as our Good Shepherd and King.

Lord Jesus, rule my heart with Your justice, love, peace, and truth. Christ Our King, Thy Kingdom Come!
