Sunday Mass Reflection

Do Whatever He Tells You

Imagine you’re there with Jesus, the disciples, and Mary at the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1-11). No one knows it, but Jesus is about to perform His first sign of turning water into wine. However, a few things need to happen before that. First, the wine must run out. Next, Mary will employ her feminine gift of sensitivity to notice the newlyweds’ need, intercede for the couple to Jesus, then demonstrate her authority by telling the servants: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5).

Jesus agrees to work this miraculous sign of turning water into wine. It could be easy to miss the last step, but finally the servants must be obedient to Jesus’ commands to fill the jugs with water and draw the new wine out for the headwaiter. Only after the servants have listened to both Mary and Jesus did the Lord bless the newlyweds with His abundant, choice wine.

Do you wonder what the servants must have thought carrying out this task that must have seemed impossible? Have you ever been faced with a task from God that seemed impossible? I certainly have, and what these situations call for is trust in the Lord. All God asks of us is to follow His directions, and trust that He will take care of the rest.

It’s inspiring to me that Jesus empowers us to do what may seem like impossible things in His name. He even makes our cooperation with His grace necessary to His saving work! We each have a role to play in building up God’s Kingdom. We are all servants of Christ the King, waiting for His Word to come to us in prayer in order to take action for His glory.

Mother Mary, thank you for noticing our needs and bringing them to Jesus. Pray for me that I have the faith and fortitude to do whatever your Son commands me.
