In today’s Gospel reading, Peter recognized and professed the truth of Christ’s identity: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). He proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of the living God, the Messiah, the King of heaven and earth. I can imagine Peter, who was sometimes impulsive, replying with fervor but without fully understanding the depth of his words. Jesus pointed out that Peter did not study to learn this. No one told him explicitly this truth. No, the Holy Spirit placed those words in his mouth, and he professed them. This was divine revelation: “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father” (Matthew 16:17).
Peter, after professing the truth of Christ’s identity, received the truth of his identity in return. Jesus calls out his given name, “Simon son of Jonah,” then gives him a new name and his mission: “I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church…” (Matthew 16:18).
Have you ever considered what your mission is, your purpose in the Kingdom of God? Each of us has a purpose, an essential role to play as members of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4-31). God has a plan for you that only you can fulfill (Jeremiah 29:11). A plan that is specific to your talents, your special qualities, your temperament: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Your role is important specifically in this place and this time: “Perhaps you were born for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). This week, consider prayerfully discerning the mission that God is placing on your heart, that is part of your identity.
“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6
Lord Jesus, please guide me in understanding my mission. I want to do Your will in filling my role in the Kingdom of God. “Here I am Lord, send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
