God is For Us

If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

What does it mean for God to be “for us?” We can begin to understand by thinking of it in ways that are familiar to us. Do you have a family member or good friend who is always there for you? He or she is there to support you, just listen, or act on your behalf when you need it. They are always on your side. That person is “for you.”  That’s what this Bible verse means. God is for you, on your side, supporting you through every moment of your life, providing you with everything you need, giving everything and holding nothing back. Even His own beloved Son, Christ Jesus.

God knew we needed a savior, and He so loved us—you and me and everyone—so much that He gave us His Son, in the person of Jesus Christ so that every person who believes in Him will not die but will have eternal life with Him (c.f. John 3:16). God is for us this much. Hes for us so much that He came to be with us and die for us. When we were broken and in sin, He didn’t abandon us to wretchedness. He didn’t give up on us. No, He repaired our brokenness: “God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Nothing can make God stop loving you or being “for you.” Nothing! Listen to the end of Romans 8: “No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39). God is for us; who or what can be against God and prevail? St. Paul answers his own question: nothing. This should fill us with confidence and courage. With Christ by our side, we “conquer overwhelmingly.”

Jesus, I marvel at Your love for me. Fill me with strength and courage in the face of every adversary. My problems, pain, and grief cannot overtake me, because in You I conquer overwhelmingly.
