This is Gaudete Sunday, the day when we focus on rejoicing in the coming of Christ. In our first reading, Isaiah tells us that in the presence of the Lord, even the desert will “bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice in joyful song” (Is 35:2). But let’s be honest, do you feel more like you’re in a dry desert than an oasis right now? Is it hard to be truly joyful in this moment? If so, what’s getting in the way of your joy?
Anxiety* is one thing that can crowd out our joy. One antidote to anxiety is prayer: “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4: 6-7). What is making your heart anxious? Whatever it is, allow God to enter into that place of anxiety and bring you His peace. When there is peace in your heart, there can be room for joy.
Stress* is another thing that steals our joy. Do you feel overwhelmed in this last week before Christmas? Maybe there’s a bigger issue causing you stress, like a problem in your family that seems too big to handle. Try putting aside your task list and the big problems for a bit and choose to find joy in the small things around you. Enjoying time with supportive friends who genuinely bring you joy is a great way to lift your heart. It’s all too easy to think “I just don’t have time to spend with friends or enjoy myself when there is so much to do.” True, there is much to be done, but choosing joy will actually bring you the strength you need to meet the demands of your life: “rejoicing in the Lord is your strength” (Neh 8:10).
Other things steal our joy, like past hurts, fears, anger, unforgiveness, and sins. Consider praying about what’s stealing your joy and ask God to help you make a plan to address it. Above all, bring these joy-stealers to Christ in prayer. He wants to receive your problems and love you through them so that you can be joyful at Christmas and always.
Jesus, please restore to me the gladness of my salvation (Ps 51:4). Help me let go of the things that steal my joy so that I can rejoice in You!
*If you are suffering from severe anxiety or stress, please seek the advice of your physician or other qualified mental health service provider. I speak from experience. Prayer is important, but if you experience anxiety and/or stress regularly, talking with a professional is equally important. May the God of all peace be with you as you bear this cross. Christ is surely there bearing it with you.
